Description

This position is a member of the Digital Learning and Instructional Innovation (DLII) and serves the university's academic community as the leading resource for instructional design and professional development. The position provides consultation and training in instructional technologies, best practices in course design, and pedagogy to support, enhance, and maintain teaching excellence. The position designs, develops, and produces original, quality instructional and/or presentational materials, and provides training and support in the use of the learning management system (LMS) and pedagogical methods. This position will stay up to date with the latest pedagogical theories and will maintain familiarity with the latest developments and trends in educational technology and techniques and will apply the university's course quality assurance program principles. The instructional designer will specialize in one or more of the following areas: virtual and augmented reality content, simulation and scenario-based learning.

Examples of Duties

Produce quality custom instructional/presentational materials for face-to-face, blended, eLearning or distance learning curriculum; and for research projects and materials for academic presentations. -55%

  • Provide expert advice and leadership to faculty on course design and engagement to translate learning objectives into high-impact content across multiple modalities, integrating industry standards and best practices.
  • Create and/or edit course content materials and documents.
  • Assist faculty in ensuring their course components are functional and support learning objectives, including links and embedded media, and other elements within the learning management system ( LMS ).
  • Advise faculty on ways to incorporate multimedia materials into online courses while adhering to the principles of Universal Design for Learning ( UDL )
  • Coordinate multiple projects with frequently adjusted priorities
  • Suggests technology or content ideas to help staff achieve desired outcomes
Promote an effective and integrative use of current and emerging instructional technologies for enhancing teaching, learning, interaction, and collaboration.-25%
  • Consult, collaborate with, and advise faculty and staff regarding instructional and presentational needs.
  • Provide technical and production support and expertise to faculty as they devise new curriculum.
  • Update existing materials into effective, technology-rich learning materials, courses, and programs.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and applications as they apply to instructional technology.
  • Assist in implementation of emerging technologies as they relate to instructional design.
  • Design and deliver workshops on pedagogical topics
  • Research and evaluate new educational trends and incorporate these trends where possible.
Work with DLII team, faculty, and staff to maintain quality in course design and development. -15%
  • Advise faculty with all matters of quality assurance in course design and development.
  • Maintain a high level of familiarity with UCM's chosen quality assurance program, and assist with internal, individualized quality assurance training as needed.
  • Perform individual internal reviews of online, face-to-face, and blended courses as requested.
  • Serve as Lead Reviewer on Internal Review teams as requested.
Collaborate with the other DLII team members to develop and conduct training sessions on supported academic technologies and UCM's chosen quality assurance program.-5%

Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree (Specify field(s) of study below), Master's degree (Specify field(s) of study below), Education/Experience substitution (specify)
  • Education may be substituted for experience or if experience may be substituted for education. Note that equivalencies are based on the following: AA or 60 credit hours = 2 years experience; BA/BS or 120 credit hours = 4 years experience; MA/MS = 6 years experience.
Experience:
  • Four years experience working in instructional design (higher education setting preferred).
  • Four years experience, with demonstrable working knowledge of a wide range of media design and educational technology software including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe Creative Suite, web-authoring tools, and learning management systems (Brightspace preferred).
  • Two years experience in project organization and promoting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Two years experience in virtual simulations, simulation-based learning content creation preferred.
  • Higher education teaching experience preferred.
