Teaching Assistant Professor in Spanish Position #1

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor. We are seeking a dynamic, highly experienced Spanish instructor to teach all levels of language classes, including literature and culture courses. The candidate should also have experience in mentoring and tutoring students and organizing extra-curricular events. Pending budgetary approval, the position will begin in fall 2025 with an initial two-year contract, with the possibility of renewal.

The candidate must possess broad competence and experience teaching introductory, intermediate, and advanced Spanish language courses that employ current foreign language pedagogical approaches (communicative, content-based, multiliteracies, and genre-based pedagogies). Experience organizing undergraduate events such as coordination of conversation tables, presentations, and workshops on language and cultural topics to engage and support students in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese is highly desirable.

PhD in Spanish or a related area, in hand at the time of appointment, and native or near-native proficiency in Spanish is required. The usual teaching load is three courses per semester with course reduction depending on departmental services. Other duties may include participating in departmental and program-wide curricular development and serving on department committees.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Pittsburgh is a vibrant community of interdisciplinary students and scholars with an undergraduate major and minors in Spanish Culture, Language, and Literature, a competitive graduate program, and an active events calendar with visiting scholars, conferences, and other research and cultural activities.

Candidates should submit: a letter of application containing a description of academic background, teaching philosophy, and diversity statement; current curriculum vitae; names and contact information for three professional references; evidence of teaching effectiveness (a sample syllabus, student evaluations, list of Spanish courses taught or that could be taught at the University of Pittsburgh). Please only list the contact for 3 references (not actual letters) in a Word document and attach it to the application as you will for all the other requested documents.

The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences is committed to building and fostering a culturally diverse environment. Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in support of a diverse community are required.
