Research Technician II
The Department of Bioengineering is currently recruiting a Research Technician for the Zervantonakis, Tumor Microenvironment Engineering lab (http://www.zervalab.com). The successful candidate will be responsible for research data collection, result interpretation and aspects of laboratory organization. Specific tasks will include: • Culturing of established mammalian cells • Imaging of live and fixed cell cultures and tissues • Fabrication of PDMS-based assays for 3D cell culture • Mouse husbandry, human xenograft assays in mice and tissue harvesting • Treatment of cells/mice and extraction of DNA/RNA/proteins • Laboratory organization, record keeping, and ordering.
The candidate will work closely with the PI and will develop analytical and technical skills in diverse biological assays. The laboratory will offer the opportunity to work at the forefront of cancer bioengineering, learn cutting edge techniques and collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of scientists and clinicians. The candidate will benefit from the rich biomedical research environment in the University of Pittsburgh, including the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, the Department of Computational and Systems Biology, and the Drug Discovery Institute and the Magee-Women’s Research Institute. The city of Pittsburgh is one of the “most livable” cities in the US and is a leader in medicine, engineering and high-tech industries.
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences/Bioengineering or related field with one to two years of experience. Cell culture and microscopy experience is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted per university guidelines.
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
Ability to speak clearly for telephone contact, have manual dexterity to use equipment, and to walk to various locations throughout the campus.
Generally sedentary, however, this position does require incumbent to occasionally visit industry or other locations throughout the campus. May occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
