Function of Position:

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Inspiring Start Programs, the Student Advocate will work as a case manager for students in Strong Foundations and Pathways to MCC programs. The advocate will work under the ESL Grant Coordinator to provide advisement and academic coaching to students in the above programs, and will also assist the ESL Grant Coordinator as needed with pre-onboarding and onboarding new students, reporting, and liaising with MCC faculty and staff.

More broadly, the student advocate will work to help their case load students succeed in their classes, and provide whatever academic and non-academic support possible. Many of the students in Strong Foundations and Pathways to MCC are at high risk of dropping out. They need proactive support. Providing that support is the student advocate's most important responsibility.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Pre-Onboarding Duties:

  • Assist in recruitment and orientation events

Onboarding Students into Programs:

  • Conduct intake of applicants
  • Assist students through the placement and registration processes

Case Management:

  • Track student progress to goal achievement
  • Maintain a caseload of students, providing case management support and coaching
  • Referral to community resources
  • Connect students to on campus resources
  • Work with college systems and software to manage caseload Advise students' academic and non-cognitive needs
  • Conduct and coordinate workshops
  • Transition students to the next academic step of their path
  • Intervention: communicate with faculty, coordinate interventions for academics, behaviors, attendance, Starfish response, develop realistic career goals and plans

Other:

  • Report on the persistence, retention, and completion objectives of students in the programs
  • Meet weekly with faculty to discuss student progress

Secondary Functions:

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends and at all campus locations

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Bachelor's in social work, psychology/counseling, education or a related field
  • Experience advising or counseling underrepresented students
  • Competence with administrative software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and willingness to further develop as necessary
  • Adept at learning new technologies
  • Experience in higher education institution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Social Work, licensed counselor
  • Two years advising or counseling underprepared students
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge /proficiency with SIS, LMS early intervention and/or degree audit systems
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

Job Type: Part-time

Hours: Approximately 15-20 hours per week

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $23.07 to $24.73 and is based on these mentioned factors.
