Overview

The Molecular Technologist performs high complexity laboratory procedures to produce DNA results for interpretation and diagnosis of complex genetic and/or pathogenic disease. General knowledge of laboratory and molecular biology-specific terminology, equipment, materials, techniques and safety. Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately. Ability to work independently within established guidelines, to adjust to rapidly changing priorities, to communicate and work effectively within a group. Skill in handling laboratory specimens, record keeping, sterile technique and laboratory equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of clients including doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and patients and maintain confidentiality and a customer focus at all times.

Key Responsiblities:

  • Prepares Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) reactions including: preparation of PCR reaction buffer(s), setting up PCR reactions, performs all PCR and library preparation, using both manual and liquid handler techniques that minimizes the chance of obtaining false results, resolves the desired PCR fragments via gel electrophoresis, hybridization reactions, or quantitatively via a real-time PCR instrument, or Sanger sequencing. Analysis of data generated from the following instruments: NextSeq 500/550 ABI 3730, and other misc. laboratory equipment.
  • Submits laboratory data to the director and to the lab information system for use in preparation of patient reports. Maintains appropriate records and handles telephone calls as related to obtaining specimens and patient information. Performs additional assignments as deemed necessary by the director or supervisor.
  • Participates in research and development of new laboratory methods.
  • Prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory with accuracy and precision. Maintains reagent and consumable laboratory supply inventories, preparing orders for replacement chemicals and supplies in timely response to laboratory testing schedule and consumption.


Responsibilities

Education & experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science AND completion of a training program or one year of experience performing molecular techniques.
    OR
    An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Qualifications



  • MT or MLS certification preferred

  • Experience with NGS techniques
