General Purpose

Alfred State College is seeking a budget analyst to join the Business Affairs Office and play a critical role in supporting the budget planning and analysis functions of the institution. This position involves financial data analysis and reporting, assisting with budget development and tracking, and supporting the campus through ad hoc analysis and excellent customer service. Supporting the Alfred State College Controller, the Budget Analyst will have the opportunity to learn finance in a Higher Education setting, provide insight through analysis and reporting to support strategic decision-making, and collaborate with colleagues by participating in and/or leading cross-functional teams in support of campus operations and strategic initiatives.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Budget Analyst Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, monitoring, and execution of budgets for various college funds including the IFR (Income Fund Reimbursable), DIFR (Dorm Income Fund Reimbursable) and SUTRA (State University Tuition Revenue Accounts) funds.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of campus-wide budgeting process.
  • Assist with student fee requests, creating budget projections and ensuring compliance with SUNY policy.
  • Prepare various financial reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide ad hoc analysis to answer business questions.
  • Perform various account expenditure reconciliations.
  • Input and manage data in various sources including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Provide analysis and insights to support strategic initiatives and projects.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with various departments and external partners.
  • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Respond to various departmental, divisional, and other inquiries and requests in a timely manner.
  • Provide training and support to staff on financial policies and procedures.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attend education and training programs as appropriate to increase awareness and understanding.
  • Participation in campus committees.
  • Ensure compliance with SUNY policies, state and federal regulations, and accounting standards.
  • Support audit processes and annual reporting requirements by SUNY by providing necessary financial information and documentation.
  • Participates in defining and improving system processes and projects.
  • The role may require occasional travel to various SUNY campuses and external meetings.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or related field.
  • 1 to 3 years' financial experience in a business office setting (i.e. accounting, budget, finance).
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, with demonstrated experience in Excel.
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • High ethical standards with the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with higher education financial operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working within SUNY financial operations.
  • Experience working in teams comprised of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing, managing and working with financial data.
