Laboratory Specialist



The Division of Infectious Diseases is searching for an incumbent who will work as part of a collaborative team conducting research on Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The role involves performing molecular, immunologic, and microbiologic assays on blood and tissues specimens from humans infected with HIV. Additional responsibilities include assisting with the overall maintenance of the laboratory.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.


Essential Functions

The position will require learning and applying an array of well-established as well as cutting-edge experimental techniques using sophisticated equipment. The incumbent will utilize an electronic laboratory notebook to record and share data with the Principal Investigators and both intra- and extramural collaborators. Many of the experiments will be conducted at BioSafety Level-2. Superior communication and time management skills with the ability to work independently and part of a team is required. Calibrating laboratory equipment, maintaining inventories and purchasing supplies are all aspects of the role. Experience with infectious disease research or immunologic techniques is preferred. A Bachelor level degree is required with preference given to those with degrees in biology, immunology, molecular biology or biochemistry.


Physical Effort

This position requires that the applicant travel between laboratories, campus buildings and to sit or stand at a laboratory bench for extended periods of time.
