Overview

This position is a three-year residency for veterinarians that is part of the Oregon State Laboratory Animal Residency Consortium (including ONPRC on the OHSU West Campus, OHSU Central and Waterfront Campuses, and the Oregon State University Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine). The purpose is to prepare veterinarians for careers in laboratory animal medicine and with successful completion leading to ACLAM board eligibility. The first two years focus on didactic training and supervised clinical experience. The second and third years include mentored research, in addition to continued clinical duties.

Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards

1. Clinical service: participates in daily oversight, treatment, reporting, and veterinary clinical management of all campus research animals.

2. Regulatory oversight: participates in designated IACUC protocol and facility review functions and program regulatory oversight.

3. Didactic training: attends didactic lecture series at ONPRC and other designated sites. This includes preparing and teaching certain Laboratory Animal Medicine related seminars and lectures

4. Mentored research training: participates in mentored research training at ONPRC and/or other designated institutions. Conducts an independent research project and submits first authorship publication to a peer-reviewed, professional journal during third year of residency.

5. Training service: participates in activities of the Compliance, Education, and Training Unit, including, but not limited to, providing training regarding the humane use of animals in research with an emphasis on nonhuman primate species.



Responsibilities

Education:

  • D.V.M. or V.M.D. from AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine OR successful completion of Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) requirements

Experience:

  • Experience working or volunteering in a laboratory animal care program

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to work independently and/or within a team possess basic veterinary clinical competency

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • North American Veterinary Licensing Exam AND have state veterinary medical license in at least one state

  • Valid driver license

  • First author publication in a peer reviewed journal

Experience:

  • Experience working with nonhuman primates

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • Oregon state veterinary license preferred
