Zablocki VA Medical Center (Milwaukee, WI) and will be responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care in accordance with the American Nursing Association’s Standards of Care and Professional Performance. The RN will utilize a broad-based clinical knowledge to assess, implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage acute and chronic illness states, assist patients in attaining optimal levels of functioning rehabilitation, evaluate patient responses to actual or potential health problems, and offer supportive measures for terminally ill patients and their families. The RN will work under the clinical oversight of the VA Nurse Manager or designated nursing leadership. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure a safe patient care environment. Assess healthcare needs and develop/maintain a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals. Perform head-to-toe assessments, insert IV lines, care for PICC lines, administer medications including IVs, and conduct wound care. Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient medical record. Coordinate and participate in patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes. Provide tracheostomy care, ventilator care, suctioning, and tube feeding as needed. Assist with urinary and bowel elimination processes and educate patients/families regarding health and medication administration. Perform EKGs, measure vital signs, and respond to emergencies including Rapid Response and Cardiac Arrest (code) situations. Ensure 100% accuracy in medication administration using BCMA to validate and document medication, promoting a safer inpatient care environment. Complete all assessments accurately and within assigned timeframes. Conduct oneself professionally, treating all patients, visitors, and staff courteously. Report incidents of verbal or physical abuse immediately to the Nurse Manager. Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and Health Technicians. Communicate changes in patient condition to the assigned physician and update patient care plans accordingly. Complete all unit-specific required training and adhere to all VA regulatory bodies' requirements. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work Schedule: Variable shifts including holidays, weekends, evenings, and overnights. Typical shifts are 12-hour rotations from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. Work may include holidays, weekends, evenings, or overnight shifts. Overtime may be necessary and must be pre-approved. A mandatory ½ hour non-paid lunch break is included in the 12-hour shifts. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Minimum of one year of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) experience or two years of Medical/Surgical experience. Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program. Current, unrestricted RN license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by a provider recognized by the American Heart Association. Minimum of one year of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) experience or two years of Medical/Surgical experience. Ventilator experience preferred. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Computer literacy with proficiency in the use of electronic medical record systems, particularly the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) and the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
