ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Deck Captain works under direct supervision of the Captain and is responsible for and oversees all deck operations onboard the cutter suction dredge and the ancillary equipment. The Deck Captain will give direct supervision to the deck crew on board the cutter suction dredge, and to the floating equipment accompanying the dredge. The Deck Captain at Callan Marine is a working position, where you will be expected to supervise but also work together with the deck crew as part of your duties.


This position will be under the direct supervision of the Dredge Captain, but also has a reporting line to the Chief Engineer on the performance of the deck gear, and floating equipment accompanying the dredge.

• Responsible for all deck operations on board the dredge

• Responsible for and coordinating anchor handling operations of the dredge and all floating- and submerge pipeline operations

• Responsible for and coordinating all maintenance and repairs on dredge equipment, such as cutter, pumps, onboard dredge pipeline, etc.

• Ensure adherence of all crew to applicable regulations in the field of safety, health and environment

• Conducting and reviewing JSAs (Job Safety Analysis)

• Promote a good atmosphere with the deck crew and maintain necessary discipline

• Maintain a good working relation with captain and crew of third-party hire equipment

• Initiate corrective and preventative actions to ensure goals are met

• Performs other related duties as assigned

• Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

The employee must have:

• A minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience working in offshore waters preferably onboard dredging equipment

• Thorough knowledge and experience with anchor handling and pipeline operations for a cutter suction dredge

• Capability of supervising a deck crew

• A good understanding of key equipment involved in the dredging process

• A good understanding of maintenance needs for deck- and dredge equipment

• Ability to comply with safety rules and regulations

• Ability to work effectively and efficiently

• Ability to work away from home at remote project locations for extended durations

• Must be reliable and motivated

• Ability to obtain TWIC

• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors

• Competencies: stress management/composure, teamwork, results driven

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, a Deck Captain must also be capable of:

• Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.

• Standing, stooping, twisting, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting repetitively and/or for long periods of time.

• Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.

• Must be able to lift and carry 30lbs individually. Anything greater than 30lbs and up to 60lbs will require additional lifting means.

• Must be able to push and pull at peak force of 150lbs.

• Climbing stairs and/or vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.

• Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.

• Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
