Description: Job Summary

The Director of Corporate Relations works collaboratively with members of the Development team and colleagues across the School to ensure successful fundraising and to build a culture of philanthropy under the leadership of the Dean of Harvard School of Dental Medicine. The incumbent, whose primary focus is on corporate relations, will also play a critical role in the annual planning process, take on related projects, and recommend strategies to enhance fundraising. They serve as a representative of HSDM at events and engage in travel.

Position Description

  1. Responsible for planning, implementing, and executing a multi-faceted corporate relations program.
  2. Contributes to meeting and exceeding department revenue goals by developing and executing prospect strategies, writing proposals, and directly soliciting outright and in-kind gifts.
  3. Identifies and evaluates corporate prospects using sound judgment to sustain and expand a donor base for HSDM.
  4. Leads and directs corporate-related fundraising activities and is responsible for developing a comprehensive, annual plan to maintain and increase corporate and foundation support for HSDM core fundraising priorities.
  5. Identifies emerging opportunities within the corporate funder community and strategically weaves them into a compelling case to positively drive revenue growth focused on institutional priorities.
  6. In collaboration with key faculty and school leadership, develops funding proposals, prepares briefing materials for faculty members in preparation for cultivation and solicitation meetings as well as on-campus visits. Provides briefings for School leadership and supports their corporate outreach activities, and staffs them as needed.
  7. Ensures that stewardship and reporting requirements are fully met to sustain successful corporate partnerships.
  8. Performs the job with an innovative mindset, thinking strategically and conceptually to realize institutional goals; works collaboratively and creatively; evaluates problems accurately and displays sound and confidential judgment to resolve them.
  9. Handles multiple projects simultaneously, meets deadlines, and effectively builds sound professional relationships.
  10. Contributes to the mission and vision of HSDM and models the School's core values in all facets of the work.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  2. 6 - 8 years of relevant fundraising and/or industry experience
  3. Ability to travel and work irregular hours as needed


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  1. Ability to work effectively and decisively with high-level decision makers, committee members, and donors.
  2. Programmatic, administrative, and/or fundraising experience is preferable, including negotiating corporate gifts to support funding priorities, preparing proposal submissions, and conducting development-related research.
  3. Intimate understanding of both higher education and philanthropy, familiarity with multidisciplinary research environments and a pro-active, entrepreneurial approach to fundraising.
  4. Previous experience in researching and identifying major new funding prospects.
  5. Ability to interface and work productively with senior level staff and broad leadership.
  6. Ability to prepare and make presentations.
  7. Motivated, creative, diplomatic and organized self-starter.
  8. Team player with demonstrated ability to collaborate to accomplish goals.
  9. Comfort with ambiguity and constant change.
  10. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written. Ability to listen well and translate donors' goals into action as appropriate.
  11. Strong knowledge of MS Office and ability to learn new software quickly.
  12. Ability to work well in a busy office with competing demands; not easily flustered nor easily overwhelmed by a high volume of activity and projects.
  13. Integrity and trust with a demonstrated ability to manage highly confidential information.
  14. Experience working in a highly matrixed organization, with a successful track record building a culture of philanthropy and strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  15. Skill in developing and implementing successful strategies for identification, cultivation and solicitation of individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  16. Outstanding organizational skills and proficiency in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner and on deadline.
  17. Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact effectively with donors, volunteers, academic leaders, faculty, staff.
  18. Self-starter with a strategic mindset complemented by enthusiasm for role, who works independently while, at the same time, works well collectively and collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals.
  19. Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background at hire
