About the Opportunity: The Senior Scientist is a part of the Downstream Bioprocess Development department and responsible for developing, optimizing, and scaling purification processes for life science enzymes used in nucleic acid manufacturing and other applications. The Sr. Scientist will also be responsible for tech transfer activities for external manufacturing. The Sr. Scientist will grow and develop a small team of research associates and/or process engineers. Additionally, this position offers the opportunity to work with and learn from a collaborative, knowledgeable team of scientists and engineers and will be based in Redwood City. Experienced with protein purification and analysis, including chromatography, bioprocess filtration (depth filtration, TFF), and scale-up. In this role you will be responsible for: Development, hands-on execution, troubleshooting, and optimization of protein purification processes including primary recovery unit operations (centrifugation, homogenization, flocculation, tangential-flow filtration (TFF), and depth filtration), chromatography (ion-exchange, affinity, hydrophobic interaction), and pre-formulation (TFF, dialysis). Leading scale-up and tech transfer of protein purification processes for external manufacturing under various regulatory systems (e.g. ISO13485, cGMP). Executing, adapting, and troubleshooting analytical methods for protein characterization such as SDS-PAGE, HPLC, UV-Vis, colorimetric assays, SEC-MALS, DLS, etc. Authoring key documents such as development reports and technology transfer packages. Representing the Bioprocess Development team in cross-functional project teams and communicate data, results, and conclusions to scientists, project management, business development, and other stakeholders. Following safety best practices and leading implementation of new safety procedures. Mentoring, managing, and training a growing team of junior scientists, process engineers, and/or research associates. The essential requirements of the job include: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemical or Biomolecular Engineering, or related discipline preferred, with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience; M.S. or B.S. with at least 8-10 years relevant experience, respectively. Hands-on experience developing, executing, troubleshooting, and optimizing protein purification processes, including chromatography, TFF, and bioprocess filtration unit operations. Very strong understanding of protein biochemistry and experience characterizing proteins using analytical methods such as activity assays, SDS-PAGE, HPLC, DLS, etc. Excellent interpersonal, project management, and time management skills to effectively communicate results to diverse audiences and plan and execute full development projects. Demonstrated ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams to execute complex projects as the purification lead. Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail, as well as experience preparing technical reports. Additional experience that would be valuable for this role includes: Experience managing technical teams. Experience using Design of Experiment (DOE) methodology for process development, including high-throughput purification and/or analytical methods. Experience with lyophilization, spray dry, pre-formulation, and/or oligo purification development. CODEXIS PAY TRANSPARENCY: The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Redwood City is $138,500 to $162,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Codexis is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states?.
